If your memories of pleated skirts you back to the horror of school uniforms and gymslips then it is time to correct. Pleats are back in fashion for summer 2011 and spring they are certainly nothing to do with the frumpy styles you have been forced to wear as a child! This is a trend very easy to carry, ideal for incorporation into outfits daywear or office, but very distinguished and elegant for evenings too. There are many different styles coming back into fashion – follow our guide advice to ensure you get it right. One thing you will notice though is that all styles are used for the entire circumference of the garment – a single pleat at the front or back of the skirt is not fashionable.

  • Sunray

Sunray pleats are clean, tight folds that radiate outward like the rays of the sun at the edge of the garment where it becomes more complete. They are usually used on light fabrics like chiffon and soft to give movement and flexible rather than stiff. The folding technique sunshine is most often presented on skirts and dresses to add volume. The look fits perfectly with the fashion trend that seventy back big this season, but also gives a subtle nod to the ballerina style, as inspired by movie smash of the year, Black Swan. For another, but seventy-style take on the trend, folds sun can be used in very large flared sleeves on tops and dresses. A variant of this style is the straight fold, narrow pleats, which is the same in all respects except that the folds are evenly spaced at the bottom. This style, once very retro, is now back in fashion and gives a less voluminous skirts and dresses from the sun style.
